A week after reporting on Dazed & Confused‘s Azealia Banks-fronted issue being controversially banned from newsstands of seven countries, here comes the actual cover that will hit—if you’re lucky—your local newsstands tomorrow. Styled by Karen Langley, the American rapper is photographed by Sharif Hamza holding a blown-up pink condom like a cigar. We assume Banks’ faux smoking coupled with her manicured middle finger sticking out is what led to the issue’s seven-country ban.
There’s no nipple slip or excess of skin at all, but there is that pink condom on the lips of a 21-year-old front and center. With the Banks story cheekily and mischievously titled “Azealia Banks Blows Up,” we’re pretty sure Dazed & Confused was drilling in the suggestiveness. Intentional or not, do you think this attempt at a pun was taken way too seriously? Or do you think the magazine really breached the boundary between artistic expression and offensiveness?
If you ask us though, we have to admit that we’ve seen worse. Besides, sex sells and magazines aren’t circulated for free, you know. Click through the slideshow above to see the rest of Banks’ photos in the said issue.
