After filing for bankruptcy in April, Betsey Johnson is sharpening her sketching skills anew with a catwalk comeback in the form of a new dress collection. The new line, made in partnership with The Levy Group’s design director Suzi Chin, is described as a “whimsical line of great fitting, fun silhouettes.” According to the press release, among the designs that we can expect are “printed,” “solid,” “sexy,” and “flowing” frocks. While the statement does boast of a lot of promise, we think Johnson’s cheerful description of her upcoming line is teeming with more personality: “I’m back!!! Doing my dress thing. Pretty and punk, sweet and sexy, always rock n’ roll.”
Besides this collection serving as Johnson’s reemergence after a four-month hiatus, this is also a milestone for The Levy Group for this marks their first foray into the dress category. Speaking about this new collaboration, president Donald Levy said, “The Levy Group has had an outstanding relationship with Betsey Johnson for over 5 years now, working together on her outerwear collection. It was a natural progression to continue into another category.”
The new line, retailing between $99 and $249 each, will launch at Betsey Johnson’s Spring/Summer 2012 Retrospective Fashion Show in September during New York Fashion Week. Although we haven’t noticed Johnson’s absence during the four months she’s been away from our news radar, we’re excited to see her effervescent persona get translated into clothes again. We have to admit however, that we’re yearning to see her signature cartwheels and splits light up the runway as well.
