The men have been making stellar fashion waves these days, and David Beckham is catching up. Weeks after Brad Pitt made Chanel history as the first male to front the brand’s No. 5 fragrance, here comes Beckham ready to ink his name in the history books of Elle UK as the magazine’s first male solo cover star.
The British soccer superstar lends his rugged good looks to the magazine’s July issue, where he is photographed by lensman Doug Inglish. On the cover, Beckham is seen lying down on the ground with his back to a swimming pool and his heavily-tattooed arm on full display. Inside, Beckham stars in an 11-page summer-themed fashion spread where he is photographed cavorting among trees and a swimming pool.
On Beckham’s selection as the first male celebrity to grace their cover, Elle UK editor-in-chief referred to his status as a “national hero.” This groundbreaking cover set a definitive milestone in the magazine’s 27-year history. “He is an icon and Elle is known for featuring icons on its cover. This is a first for us on the newsstand and I believe he is loved by men and women alike,” said Candy on The Hollywood Reporter.
The eponymous “Beckham issue” will hit newsstands on May 30. In the meantime, Elle readers can also sneak a peek into what went down the shoot in a behind-the-scenes video posted on the magazine’s website.
