Donatella Versace showed no restraint for Atelier Versace’s highly-anticipated return on the runway, as they chose the glamour and splendor of the Ritz as the venue to showcase their Fall 2012 Couture collection. Then again, it seems only fitting since her brother’s shows were staged in the hotel for eight years.
It was a show high on desire and sexiness, something that is expected from the blonde designer. The lineup teased around “the idea of deconstruction and reconstructon in all its various forms,” which proved true in the abundance of dresses seemingly pieced together to create one surprisingly seamless fabric.
The first look modeled by Lindsey Wixson evoked the tried-and-tested aesthetics of the Versace house with its strong shoulders and signature skin-tight silhouette. Versace did not stray from what has been the hallmark look of the house, churning out dresses that offered thigh-high slits, peek-a-boo waist cutouts, and an excess of glitter and sequins. Although there were a number of dazzling details to gaze upon, what stood out is the striking use of what appears to be plasticized leather strips on the dresses. The said strips were fashioned into full dresses and waist-accentuating bustier. The fifth look, a printed pink ensemble, put whimsy and sensuality together as the designer paired a breezy scarf-printed skirt with a glorious printed bustier. The same combination appeared in the evening looks, which stunned in vivid hues of blue, purple, yellow as well as softer shades of lilac, peach and cream.
As always, Donatella showed no fear in putting a woman’s body to the forefront and using it to their sartorial advantage. Indeed, Atelier Versace’s runway homecoming met all expectations. With such a sexy and strong collection, we’re assuming the star-studded audience, which include Christina Hendricks, Lea Michele and Jessica Alba, have already taken notes of their favored pieces to don on the red carpet.
