Marola Green ballerina flats from the Sustainable Soles line

Gucci is carving a more defined path towards a greener industry as the brand announced the launch of Sustainable Soles, an eco-friendly footwear line designed by creative director Frida Giannini. Perhaps a follow-up effort to their sustainable eyewear collection last year, the new range will include a style each for men and women that will be made from biodegradable plastic.

Women will find the Marola Green ballerinas ideal for summer with its cutout details, which will arrive in a variety of polished tones, including blush, taupe, and black. The brand’s signature motif is embossed on top of the toe box. For the men, Gucci will churn out California Green sneakers in low- and high-top designs. The sneakers have bio-rubber soles, vegetable-tanned calfskin uppers, and bio strings. Other eco-friendly details include recycled polyester labels on the sneakers’ tongues.

The Sustainable Soles collection will be available on the Gucci website as well as their flagship stores worldwide in June. With this footwear collection being Gucci’s second venture into greener territories, who’s to say the brand won’t surprise the fashion world with a third effort—an eco-friendly handbag line perhaps?
