Talk about a drastic cover makeover.
Fashion darlings and Hollywood sirens Keira Knightley, Scarlett Johansson, Mia Wasikowska and Rooney Mara were tapped by W to star on their four-cover 40th anniversary issue. Shot by top fashion photographer Steven Klein, the actresses were given a complete beauty makeover that drew inspiration from the magazine’s colorful four-decade history.
Mara transformed from being The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to the magazine’s 1970’s cover girl. With a wide-brimmed maroon hat, blunt bangs and geometric clothes to boot, Mara truly looked the part. Representing the 1980’s was former Miu Miu muse Wasikowska, who sported orange hair and some wicked eye makeup. Her beauty look has some 1980’s elements to it—the excess of colors, for instance—but we can’t help but feel like she looks more like a modern day geisha.
The sultry Johansson was dressed down and dirty, as she took charge of emulating the 1990’s grunge persona. Her luscious blonde locks were dyed black and had white streaks at the front. It was very Courtney Love, but sexier and more alluring. Knightley, on the other hand, was perhaps the luckiest of the four women since she had the easiest decade to pull off—2000’s. For the cover, she traded hair color with Johansson and rocked slicked back blonde hair. Her scarlet lips, strong brows and gargantuan diamond earrings stood out against her porcelain skin.
While magazines usually look to the future for cover inspiration, W goes the opposite direction with their November concept. How do you like their makeovers for the cover?
