Ladies in Lace

From the sidelines, watching stars navigate the red carpet is one mesmerizing sight. As celebrities left and right step out in their most glamorous and sophisticated dresses, we are left with the seemingly endless, nonetheless exciting responsibility of critiquing each look. The said task, which often requires a fresh perspective every time a star traipses down the dangerously judgmental red carpet, let us in on our favorite celebrities’ richly diverse style preferences.

While every red carpet event is always an opportunity for a true style star to stand out by brandishing their personal eccentricities, the women of Hollywood are often one in their desire to be fashionably accepted and sartorially commended.  This season for instance, stars have been particularly repetitive in glamourizing themselves in endless rows of lace numbers. Although lace dresses have never really left everybody’s fashion consciousness for its unquestionable transeasonal allure, this year’s lace parade could well be the most colorful and adventurous yet.

In January for instance, Olivia Wilde doubled the elegance of a black dress when she stepped out in a floor-length number that put a surprising twist on the prevailing cutout trend with its lace overlay panel. It may well be the effortless elegance of the fabric that attests to its unceasing trendiness, which even had the anti-girly Kristen Stewart buckling under its amorous appeal. At the Kids’ Choice Awards in March, the raven-haired beauty embraced the lace bug and unleashed her womanly side in a flirty blue mini. The two stars may have a fashion sense as different as oil and water, but one can see clearly how the quiet simplicity of a lace dress can bring forth a sense of commonality that is threaded by aristocracy and extravagance.

This spring and summer, designers also took the fabric away from its stereotypical innocence and stepped up its sexual appeal. Mila Kunis for one, challenged the norm and paraded her seductively-endowed cleavage in a violet Prabal Gurung dress. Although the look garnered a healthy mix of yays and nays, the versatility of the fabric was clearly told. Given its outstanding capacity for a resounding red carpet statement, we don’t wonder anymore why celebrities continue to emerge in lace dresses—traditionally virginal or sexually charged.

As such, we’ve curated some of the most memorable lace dresses that captured our style attention this year, which include the Michael Kors dress worn by Emily Blunt at The Tribeca Film Festival and most recently, Jessica Biel’s white and quirky Giambattista Valli frock.
