Michelle Obama: Power style, day in and day out

The First Lady never takes a faux pas with the wrong shoe. Especially as she graces this month’s cover of Vogue.  As the biggest fashion mag’s correspondent recounts the cover shoot of the Obamas, it becomes increasingly clear that these White House residents are a typical wholesome American family where the wife rules the precise hum of the household in a Reed Krakoff dress and the husband strolls in after a day’s work flicking away all diplomatic worries from his tie.

Vogue’s portrait of the presidential couple is essentially an homage to Michelle, whose fashion sense plumbs the elegance of Jackie O and consistently frees itself from the stuffy. For the shoot alone, she strolled the carpets in cozy kitten heels and, we imagine, perked up the interview with smart tosses of a full head of bangs.

Those bangs are now the most edifying fringe of the season, taken away from their doll duties to stand guard over a power lady’s forehead. This is the reason Vogue just has to run a special edition on the President’s wife. Her podium looks and off-duty casuals reappropriate the regular American woman’s wardrobe — its easy cardigans, slouchy sweaters, and fast, zip-up boots. But Michelle never forgets that designers also make dignitaries and sends this message with a relaxed effect.
