Downtown girls’ favorite hairstyle made quite the return on the spring 2013 catwalks, decorating several runways with exciting and interesting new-season varieties. On the Tory Burch runway, it was all about the laidback and easygoing spirit of spring and summer. Messy fishtail braids were done with intentional haphazardness, letting one braid drape at the front of the shoulder while one lopsidedly hung at the back.

Tess Giberson also dabbled in this free-spiritedness, sending out models with loose and messy—almost unkempt—hair that had a single plait on the side. Although braids boast of an aesthetic grounded on femininity, Herve Leger vamped it up by creating simple track braids on the side edges. Paired with a deep side-part, the look was seriously sleek, sexy and perfect for summer sultriness.

Whether you like yours subtle or bold, any of these braid styles is a win in the summer beauty department. Which one will you most likely be sporting next season?
