The exorbitant spectacle of white on the runways of New York Fashion Week felt like half of America’s stylish population either signed up for a white-only season or will be walking down the aisle next spring. No, that was not an exaggeration. From day one of NFYW, designers have been at it, churning out collections that continue spring 2012’s insane fascination with white.
Virtually every designer who mattered had this immaculate color incorporated into their collections, challenging the rainbow of colors that typically dominate this season. One such designer is the superbly feminine Vera Wang. The designer changed it up and a bit and squeezed in several white dresses that were not only sweet and romantic but modern and structured as well. The toothache-inducing sweetness of pleated skirts for instance, was countered with edgy mannish tops and gorgeously tailored blazers.
Cushnie et Ochs and Tibi got a little romantic for the season, bannering dresses in stunning fits and silhouettes. Had their looks been styled with an engagement ring, most of the models would have looked perfect for a glorious garden wedding in the afternoon. A loose-fitting dress from Tibi however, particularly caught our attention for its sheer simplicity. With a lace overlay over the minimalist white dress, it was perhaps our choice as the white dress of spring 2013.
Even the dark and neutral-loving Victoria Beckham cave in to this enduring trend, injecting the color into her signature dresses with figure-hugging silhouettes. Cementing the color’s unyielding trendiness, designers also drenched tough biker jackets, sleek blazers and mannish pants in pristine white.
