Every year, Italian tire company Pirelli releases the Pirelli Calendar, a prestigious calendar that features photos of beautiful women often provocatively dressed or completely naked. For 2013, that tradition has been put to an end (perhaps temporarily) after they tapped photojournalist Steve McCurry to helm the the 2013 Pirelli Calendar. Instead of taking the familiar path towards nudity, McCurry changed it up when he decided to keep the women’s clothes on.
Shot on location in the exotic city of Rio de Janeiro, the calendar will offer 11 impressive photos featuring models, actresses, and singers. Some of the beauties included are Summer Rayne Oakes, Petra Nemcova, Karlie Kloss, Elisa Sednaoui, Isabeli Fontana, Sonia Braga, Marisa Monte and a pregnant Adriana Lima. Although the models were all covered up, the calendar still had a hint of steaminess. The models were clad in short shorts and dresses, as they posed at different locations in the city.
According to McCurry, he considered Pirelli’s offer with the condition that he could do it in his own way. “I was surprised because I don’t shoot much fashion,” the 62-year-old photojournalist said in a press conference. “But I do know about beautiful women.”
McCurry also wanted to emphasize through the calendar the fact that the models, though insanely glamorous their lives may be, are “purposeful,” “idealistic” and philanthropic. Nemcova for instance, founded the Happy Hearts Fund while Kloss fosters FEED with her Perfect 10 Cookies, to name a few.
Besides these ladies, the Pirelli Calendar included a series of photos featuring the local people and sights. The 2013 Pirelli Calendar, which debuted in 1964, has previously tapped Karl Lagerfeld, Mario Testino, and Annie Leibovitz.
