At the Q Awards in London, Kylie Minogue left us horrified when we saw her wearing this black-and-white gingham dress that looked tacky and outdated from every angle. Although we love Stella McCartney and her signature hourglass dresses, this design just doesn’t make the sartorial cut for us.
The asymmetrical halter neck seems to be backed by good design intentions since it offered a stunning futuristic contrast against half of the classic sweetheart neckline. However, with the dress arriving in fine checked prints while the neckline has larger gingham patterns, it looks like one haute mess. The disjointed neckline does not do the dress any favor at all. While illusion dresses and mesh panels have been—and still are—the rage, those details just make Minogue look like she’s wearing a lopsided bib, ready to carve a prime rib.
Although it’s far from being an elegant choice, the dress actually isn’t the biggest problem here but the fabric choice. Had the cutout dress arrived in a simpler but more colorful fabric, then this could have been a knockout look. We can’t help but imagine that this kind of tailoring deserve a pop of cobalt blue or even fire engine red.
Who knows if we’ll see this dress again, but for now, we have to trust on this red carpet debut and assume that the said frock should (hopefully) not find its way to the spotlight once more. What do you think of this look?
