Style Evolution: Dakota Fanning

There are usually two ends when it comes to growing up in the spotlight. For the few who made it, it’s a testament to their box-office or critical appeal for they have withstood the changing tides of the unacknowledged dog-eat-dog Hollywood arena. The rest who weren’t too lucky however, had to face the reality that much like movie roles, they’re replaceable. Among the pool of child stars that dominated our screens in the past, it was Dakota Fanning who truly made a resounding Hollywood arrival at a tender age of 7. She garnered critical acclaim when she acted alongside Sean Penn in the drama movie I Am Sam, helping her move past bubblegum roles and into the realms of heavy-hitting films such as Taken, Trapped, Man on Fire, and Hide and Seek.

Often described as an enchanting young girl with an old soul, Fanning soon evolved from being the little blonde girl who can act to a budding movie star who can give today’s top-earning actresses a run for their money. Blessed with a set of disarming eyes and an otherworldly beauty, it didn’t take long for designers to embrace her as a true fashion darling. Even at a young age, Fanning had already shown interest in fashion, appearing all decked out to brave the red carpet cameras eager to capture her young, toothy smile. With age comes sartorial maturity as well, which truly beamed in 2008. Since then, the awarded actress hasn’t looked back, continuing to develop her sense of style.

It’s hard to imagine that though Fanning has been around for more than 10 years, she’s still a bonafide teenager at 18 years old. The girl may have yet to let go of her affinity for ethereal and dreamy princess-like gowns, but to this day, she’s already blossomed into a style star—sitting front row at countless designer shows and posing for high-fashion ads. With Marc Jacobs calling her and her sister Elle his fashion muses, we don’t see the young star going anywhere but right at the center of fashion’s most critical spotlight.

Click through the slideshow to see how far Fanning has leapt in terms of fashion, as we tracked some of Fanning’s red carpet style beginning 2003 through 2012.
