Style Evolution: Zooey Deschanel

Two things come to mind when we think of Zooey Deschanel—bangs and tights. The resident hipster chick of Hollywood, Deschanel first made a splash on the big screen in 1999, where she appeared in Mumford alongside Jason Lee, Loren Dean and Hope Davis. However, it wasn’t until she was cast in Almost Famous did she earn critical attention for her acting skills. A string of films including Elf, Failure to Launch, Yes Man and 500 Days of Summer were added to her credit, cementing her place—albeit still relatively small—in Hollywood.

Like her steady rise to fame, our fascination for the perennially fringed indie beauty grew with every red carpet appearance. An old soul ironically wrapped in teenage awkwardness, Deschanel was an easy standout on the red carpet because of her always quirky—often questionable—sartorial choices. Dubbed as the poster child of the indie-chic style, Deschanel was regularly seen in vintage dresses, tea-length frocks and more specifically, numbers that carried the signature silhouette of the 1950’s.

Throughout the years, one could easily say that she was a fashion train-wreck, stepping out in ensembles that were seemingly chosen in bad taste. It was like her hipster persona and It girl status couldn’t get along, creating looks that were neither stunning nor terrible, but simply gawky. Despite her many style booboos, Deschanel eventually picked it up when she found the right balance between her two pseudo personas, establishing a look that could easily be described in two words—cute and classy.

Although her style is somewhat of an acquired taste, there’s no doubt that Deschanel’s recent sartorial escapades have been more successful than ever. From romantic lace numbers to easy minis, the actress has been dipping her toes in ensembles that capture her feminine persona. These days, Deschanel’s funky style persona is still on parade as she continues to sport her favored silhouette. Even her love affair with tights—may they be opaque or not—are still making a red carpet splash every so often.

Despite these little idiosyncrasies, no girl has so far been deserving of a Style Evolution feature than Deschanel. Although far from being a trendsetter, her unpretentious style and candid approach to dressing are mesmerizing to watch from the sidelines.
