The arrival of a new fashion season is always an exciting time. For the sartorially-obsessed, it’s that time of the year where a wardrobe update becomes as important as finding a long-lost loved one. Then again, Fashion Week was never just about the clothes. Just as innovative and thrilling as the new-season clothing trends are the breathtaking beauty looks that brought to life many of our favorite designers’ brilliant collections.

As such, we returned to the backstage happenings of the fall 2012 runway shows from Milan, London, New York and Paris, and rounded up some of the most mesmerizing hair, makeup and nail trends that promise a magical fall and winter season.

The Smokey Neutral. The smoky eye, a perennial eye makeup favorite of women, took on a more mellow approach on the fall catwalks. At Burberry Prorsum, grays and blacks were traded in for a lighter color palette consisting of browns and nudes.  Although it’s a startlingly bold departure from the high-octane colors of summer beauty looks, the neutral smokey look has proven itself to be the most versatile.

Metallic Eyes. The concept “metallic is the new nude” is one that transcends the confines of fashion. Sartorially, metallic has indeed become the new nude, but beauty-wise, designers have also injected the high-octane glamour and appeal of metallic tones onto women’s daily makeup. This fall, the eyes become one of the centers of attention—its either the moodiness of the smoky neutral or the majestic appeal of metallic eyes. On the Roberto Cavalli runway, it got even better with colored metallics becoming the purveyor of inimitable beauty.

Wet and Sexy. As we bundle up for cool fall and winter winds, biker jackets downplay our sexiness as it emphasize our tough side. As such, a set of chicly oiled and slick hair becomes the torchbearer of easy sexiness. Be careful not to overdo this trend however, for one can easily breach the line between slicked up sexiness and downright greasiness. Nail that look by taking cue from Cushnie et Ochs’ parade of slick-haired models.

Rosy Cheeks. Leave your favorite summer bronzers at home for the sun-kissed glow of bronze-y blushes will become nothing but a remnant of the past season. This time around, perfectly flushed cheeks in soft pinks will become the hallmark complement to fall’s cooler air. Besides, nothing goes better with amazing winter whites than the sheer iridescence of pinkish cheeks.

Exaggerated Winged Eyeliners. Make no mistake about it. The cat-eye is back with full vengeance—decorating our peepers with stylish exaggerations. Layering becomes next season’s norms, giving larger-than-life cat-eyes a free pass as well. Whether you prefer it liquid or stick-based, prepare to lay it on thick no matter what the occasion.

Defined Lashes. A transeasonal beauty must-do, a set of finely defined lashes is the easiest way to respond to fall’s makeup challenges. If you’re neither for the smoky neutral eyes nor the metallic eyeshadow, go for Barbie-like smoulder with a few layers or black mascara on the upper and lower lashes to truly bring out your eyes.

Dark and Bloody Lips. One of fall season’s most ubiquitous beauty trends, dark lips took over the throne that ruby red and sprightly orange lips held in the past two seasons. Although they may appear nightmarish and moody, the dark lips are more than just a creepy departure from the cheery vividness of last season. In the weeks ahead, moody burgundy and paralyzing plums will nudge us awake from our rainbow dreams and seduce us into the striking world of dark-and-gothic lips.

Decorated Hair. A few of our favorite celebrities have already dabbled into this trend, but we reckon hair accessories will only truly create a rioting arrival until fall officially comes around. Don’t expect frilly headbands and feminine hair clips however, for next season, we’re counting on gold and silver-toned hair adornments to command fall hairstyles on and off the red carpet.

Bold Brows. Overplucked and overgrown eyebrows are anything but beautiful this fall. The beauty look at Sportmax’s fall 2012 runway show was the stellar example of how next season’s brows will become the center of all beauty attention. Whether you wear it with minimal or piled on makeup, a set of perfectly groomed and finely filled eyebrows will leave you breathtakingly on-trend for fall.

Dark Nails. Colorful—and often tacky—nail arts will finally retire next season to give way to the arrival of dark nails. Mystery is key in choosing a nail color for fall. As such, moody classics such as black, plum and violet will most likely be the ones to wear. For a foolproof set of nails for fall however, go for the classy and glossy black lacquers that bathed models’ hands on the Valentino runway.
