Evangeline Lilly rained arrows on some orcs in the second installment of The Hobbit, but it is in the premiere of The Desolation of Smaug that she truly killed it.
With her hair darkened from the auburn, poker-straight tresses she sported as elf Tauriel in the movie, the actress took the arm of co-star Orlando Bloom, who also traded in his Legolas blondeness for his more natural dark curls, at the red carpet opening in Berlin.
Lilly, however, upstaged her onscreen alter ego in a sheer tiered dress by Alberta Ferreti. Tauriel’s austere elven cloaks are left hanging by this floor-length cover-all, which descends to the carpet in elegant, cascading frills.
Bloom, meanwhile, ditched black-tie and went blue and bare-shirted.
Star Martin Freeman rose to full human height in a dove-gray three-piece. His Sherlock co-star and voice behind Smaug, Benedict Cumberbatch, flirted with velvet and a bowtie. The two British actors, in the offing, just came off from being hard at work for the third season of Sherlock, which is set to air in January in England.
The Hobbit entourage was a tight family picture on the red carpet, with Lilly and Bloom posing arm-in-arm and occasionally rejoining the three-part film’s director, Peter Jackson and his family.
