We’re placing bets that fashion is experiencing a Christian Dior couture moment, as women left and right are stamping it out on the red carpet in fascinatingly modest tea-length and midi dresses. Although such frocks are nothing new in the sartorial spotlight, we can’t help but associate the feverish attention this lady-like length is getting with Raf Simons’ debut couture collection for Dior.
With Marion Cotillard and Rachel Weisz successfully pulling off the often-awkward length at the high-profile movie premieres of The Dark Knight Rises and The Bourne Legacy, women noticed its high-fashion potential. Even when Jessica Biel dipped her toes in the trend in a third Dior Couture dress—and failed miserably—celebrities ignored its disastrous potential.
Red carpet norms usually dictate a sexy mini or a sweeping gown, but we at Fashion Glamour are actually growing fond of this emerging trend. Recently, Dakota Johnson tried out the trend in a sleeved green dress with a sweetheart neckline at the Goats premiere. Carmen Ejogo also explored her style boundaries with a simple-yet-stunning black off-shoulder dress at the New York screening of Sparkle. Even the ravishing Kristin Kreuk, who has the figure for sultry minis, won us over with her dreamy white number at a Television Critics Association summer party.
Although we’re still well within summer territory, this fascination for more modest hemlines could well be the start of our transition from summer’s excess of skin to bundling up for the next season. To see all the looks carrying this trend we love, click through the slideshow above.
