Photographer Tyler Shields and Francesca Eastwood are at it again. After famously destroying a pair of Christian Louboutin high heels in January, the couple returned with a louder bang as they slaughtered—quite literally—a $100,000-Birkin bag in the name of freedom.
The controversial photographer and his girlfriend, who is actually the daughter of Clint Eastwood, detailed their savage show of creative freedom in a blog posted on Shields’ website on May 26. He blogs: “For the people who don’t know a Birkin is the most sought after bag in the entire world there is a waiting list and some of them can run upwards of $100,000. This is the red Crocodile Birkin VS the red $200 chainsaw and 4 dollars of gasoline!”
As if ripping the world’s most sought-after bag in two wasn’t enough, the couple also set the bag on fire much to their creative delight—but at the expense of breaking people’s hearts who are at the tail end of the bag’s waiting list. “Are you sad to see me destroy it?” was the question Shields’ posed at the end of the entry, which has been receiving a variety of responses ranging from individuals commending Shields’ bold defiance against consumerism to people expressing disgust over his wannabe-hipster actions. Eastwood is also hit hard by the controversy, with numerous online death threats and vicious hate mails being thrown her way.
The entire Birkin murder was shown in Eastwood’s reality TV show Mrs. Eastwood and Company where Eastwood appeared unsure of her boyfriend’s provocative photoshoot concept until he wheedled his way to get her approval. Amid the social bedlam and public outrage this photoshoot has created, we wonder how the Hermes brand is taking this.
